Mate is more than a drink; it’s rooted in Argentina’s culture of hospitality and welcome. The drink can be consumed solo or in a communal ritual of thanksgiving where the gourd (container) is passed along as the receiver gives thanks and drinks from the gourd using a bombilla (a straw with that filters out mate leaves).
Yerba mate is a plant species native to South America. Its leaves and twigs are harvested and used to make the beverage by adding hot water (cold water is used on hot days). Mate was first consumed by the Guarani people in what is known today as Paraguay. Mate is known to have health benefits related to a high concentration of polyphenols (antioxidants). It is also valued for its caffeine content (like that of green tea).
The traditional vessel for this drink is made from a hollowed-out gourd. Our container is made of glass with a leather exterior. We do not recommend you wash it in the sink, but rather wipe it clean with a towel. This will prevent water from getting trapped between the glass and leather. Do not put in the dishwasher. Our Yerba Mate Gourd comes with a bombilla.
