Are All of our Clothes Made in the USA?

Clothing is Made All Over the World

Clothing you see at department stores and shops across the country is mostly made overseas thanks to economic forces of globalization. Globalization though, in our minds is not always a bad thing. Trade and technology have lifted many nations out of poverty. Food we grow here in the states, (Montana grows a lot of wheat) can be shipped all over the world.

And just to be up front. We are not black and white on this issue. Some might say all in the US or nothing. But for us, our goal of providing quality goods western amigos + amigas can afford, is not always feasible here in the States. We don’t want our customer spending their entire paycheck on a jacket, just so they can go back to work to pay for the pants next month. Sometimes it just costs too much to make stuff in the USA.

What it means to be a Montana Brand

At this point if you don’t know anything about out brand, we are based in a place called Great Falls, Montana. Surely you have heard things about Montana, from westerns and the show Yellowstone, and maybe that we have a “Big Sky” here. If anything, you should know, we are proud of where we come from.

Our clothing and gear are inspired by the culture and landscapes we have encountered on the way. A lot of us grew up with one foot in the city and the other on the wild and untamed landscapes across the state. Some of those include the Missouri and Smith Rivers, the Rocky Mountain Front, and the Little Belt Mountains. Some of us rodeo or fly fish, others of us skate and snowboard.

But all of us are into taking risks, trying something new, encountering adventure. Growing up around here we learned how to adopt an eclectic sense of style. You shouldn’t have to change when adventure calls. One minute you might be in a business meeting, the next on an approach to Prospector (a local climbing area). The clothing we make is made with that in mind.

So to be clear, our home office is based out of Great Falls, MT. We have people working for us remote living in Florida, Minnesota, and Texas. And we have factories (we don't own any of these factories) making clothes for us all over the world. Some are here in the USA from New York to Texas and California; others are in Peru, Bangladesh and Colombia.

Made New York City's Historic Garment District

Some of our clothing is made in the USA. You probably already knew that. But where in the US? Specifically, though?

One of those places is in the Garment District of New York City. In this video we met up with factory owner Ida La to talk about some of the challenges the Garment District faces considering the growing global economy. She believes we all feel better when we contribute to society, when our tax money can be used to help someone.

Ida and Duncan (Ida’s Husband) took us out to a Chinese dinner after our conversation. It was good she ordered for us, or we would have missed out on all the good stuff. We are looking forward to making more of our items in the Garment District. One of those being our beloved Original Canvas Work Pant coming by the end of this year (2023).  Below is the video we made while we were there visiting in 2022. Stay tuned for more.
